Amend House Bill 279 2013 Facebook Image

HB279 is extremely bad for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  Branded as the "Religious Freedom Bill," it has the potential to gut and to void current Fairness Ordinances in Kentucky.  The fact is that the bill is very vaguely written and states that people may opt out of certain laws or regulations based on personal religious belief.  In a city like Lexington, which has had a Fairness Ordinance for more than ten years, people could try to fire people or evict them from rental housing based on sexual orientation because the boss or the landlord has religious beliefs in opposition to gay people.
In the interest of honesty, we must inform you that HB279 has already passed out of the House.  It goes for a vote in the Senate Thursday.  It is expected to pass.  If it passes, it goes to the governor.  He could veto the bill, but this does not seem likely either.  We need people to call their legislators in the Senate and ask them to amend the bill to exempt already given civil rights on both a state and local level.
