Fight the flu with a vaccination; confirmed cases up to 78

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department nurses are prepared to use their needles to stop the spread of the flu. Lexington currently has 78 confirmed cases of the flu, up from 60 last week. Of the total cases, 53 have been in children. “Kentucky has started seeing its peak flu season in late February and early March, so anyone who hasn’t received a flu shot yet should still come out and get one,” said LFCHD spokesman Kevin Hall. “Flu shots are the best way to fight the flu and help prevent spreading it to other members of your family.” Flu shots are available at the Public Health Clinic North, 805A Newtown Circle. No appointment is necessary. Flu shots cost $25, and Medicaid, Medicare B, cash, checks, credit cards and some insurances are accepted. The Public Health Clinic North is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday; and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday. The seasonal flu shot, which also provides protection against H1N1, is recommended to all people ages 6 months and older. Last year, Lexington had 305 confirmed cases of the flu. The health department provided 5,526 flu vaccinations throughout the season. For additional information, find the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/LFCHD.
